Nîmes,
a rich history
Nîmes combines a rich past, evidenced by the presence of a large number of Roman monuments, with the relaxed lifestyle characteristic of the South of France. The city has its origins in a sacred fountain, Nemausus, which rises at the foot of Mont Cavalier. Among the many peoples who have lived in Nîmes over the centuries, it was the Romans who left their cultural mark on the city.
The only completely preserved temple from the ancient world, the Maison Carrée was built in honour of the «princes of youth» Caius and Lucius Caesar, adopted sons of Emperor Augustus. This harmoniously designed building faces the Carré d'Art, a modern media library designed by Lord Norman Foster that regularly hosts exhibitions, which you can discover during your stay at Le Pré Galoffre, a hotel near Nîmes.
The monuments of Nîmes
Built at the end of the 1st century AD, the Arena of Nîmes is the best-preserved amphitheatre from the Roman era. Its harmonious proportions (133 metres long and 101 metres high) can accommodate up to 24,000 spectators. Gladiator fights have now given way to bullfighters, athletes and artists who perform each year in this historic venue.
Your visit to Nîmes would not be complete without a stroll through the Jardins de la Fontaine, a vast garden laid out in the 18th century, adorned with ponds, statues and vases, and home to the Temple of Diana and the Magne Tower, where the locals like to stroll and play pétanque.
The feria, a true Nîmes institution
Nîmes is undoubtedly a city of celebrations. In summer, it lives to the rhythm of its many festivities.
